Site supervisors must have the following qualifications:
1. A minimum of a master’s degree in counseling or a related profession with equivalent qualifications, including appropriate certifications and/or licenses;
2. A minimum of two years of pertinent professional experience in the program area in which the student is enrolled; and
4. Relevant training in counseling supervision.
The Clinical Coordinator reviews all Clinical Site Approval Request Forms (to review clinical site approval request forms for each program, simply click on the following hyperlinks: CMHC, MCFCT, School Counseling) to ensure that prospective site supervisors have the requisite degrees, certifications/licenses, supervision training and/or credentials, and years of experience. When a prospective supervisor does not have a relevant training in counseling supervision, the Clinical Coordinator considers the “match” of the student, the site and the supervisor. In determining whether the match is optimal to the student’s clinical experience, the Clinical Coordinator considers the following four factors before the site is approved or not:
a. Could the site provide a comprehensive experience for the student and meet the student’s career goals?
b. Does the prospective site supervisor have outstanding credentials and/or significant years of experience?
c. Does the prospective supervisor have the past or current work experience in a supervisory capacity?
d. Does the prospective site supervisor have previous experience supervising a student from the Department and extensive knowledge of practicum/internship requirements, policies, and evaluations?
In order to assist the site supervisors who do not have relevant training in counseling supervision, an online tutorial on clinical supervision has been developed and will be implemented in the Fall 2012 semester. This online tutorial covers the roles of supervisors, developmental stages of interns, and professional issues in supervision.

3. Knowledge of the program’s expectations, requirements, and evaluation procedures for students.
School Counseling
Students are provided verbal and written description of the expectations for site supervisors prior to the time students select the site and supervisor. This information is discussed with the students during the yearly Clinical Orientation which is held every Fall semester. This orientation provides an extensive overview and explanation of the Practicum and Internship experiences including the goals, expectations, and requirements that students must meet in their clinical work. Students are given a copy of the Field Site Supervisor Manual which is provided to the proposed site supervisor after the site is approved. Students are expected to discuss the program requirements with the prospective supervisor in the process of securing sites (see pages 14-16 of the Field Site Supervisor Manual).
Students must submit the following information to the Department for approval of the site; Clinical Site Approval Request Form, On Site Supervision Agreement Form, and the Site Supervisor Vita. When the site and proposed supervisor are deemed acceptable by the Department, the letter of approval is sent to the supervisor with the enclosed documents: Summary of Clinical Site Requirements, Practicum Evaluation of Counselor or Supervisor Evaluation of Counselor (Internship), and Weekly Supervision Session Log. The letter and the information provided in the Field Site Supervisor Manual (see pages 14-20) reinforce the Departmental expectations of the site and the supervisor.
The program faculty member who serves as the practicum or internship group supervisor visits the site each semester and discusses with the site supervisor the goals, expectations and requirements of the student’s clinical experience (see pages 3-14 of the Field Supervisor Manual). The group supervisor reviews the required professional activities with the site supervisor and encourages the latter to involve students in all that are applicable during the course of the clinical experience. The group supervisor also consults with the supervisor on the student performance and any concerns that have arisen. During this visit the Practicum Evaluation of Counselor Form or Supervisor Evaluation of Counselor Form (Internship) is discussed with the site supervisor. These evaluation forms are designed as comprehensive student evaluations for both the practicum and internship experiences. The deadline for submitting the evaluation form is indicated in the site approval letter for the practicum experience. The letter, including the Supervisor Evaluation of Counselor Form, indicates the submission deadline is sent to the site supervisor during the student’s internship experience. Further follow-up on program expectations, requirements and evaluation procedures occur as needed.
Clinical Mental Health Counseling
The same procedures for the School Counseling Program are used with the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program. For students in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program, however, the information is provided regarding clinical sites in the Generalist track and Substance Abuse Counseling track. The specific program requirements are discussed at the clinical orientation. Clinical Site Approval Request Form, Supervisor Evaluation of Counselor Form (Internship), and Summary of Clinical Site Requirements that are specific to the CMHC program are used. The program faculty also discusses with the site supervisor the program specific goals and requirements as described on pages 3-14 of the Field Site Supervisor Manual during the site visit.
Marriage, Couple and Family Counseling and Therapy
The same procedures for the School Counseling Program are used with the Marriage, Couple and Family Counseling and Therapy Program. The specific program requirements are discussed at the clinical orientation. Clinical Site Approval Request Form, Supervisor Evaluation of Counselor Form (Internship), and Summary of Clinical Site Requirements that are specific to the MCFCT program are used. The program faculty also discusses with the site supervisor the program specific goals and requirements as described on pages 3-14 of the Field Site Supervisor Manual during the site visit.
