The School Counseling (SC) program at TCNJ is a 48 credit Master of Arts degree in Counseling that prepares students to assume a variety of roles in support of the academic, career, and personal/social development of students in K-12 school settings. As such, this program prepares students for school counselor certification in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and other reciprocating state school counselor certifications across the United States. Students are trained to deliver the full range of counseling services provided at the elementary, middle or junior high school, and high school levels. Such services require students to study and develop mastery in: curriculum planning; consultation; individual and group counseling; classroom guidance activities; educational and career counseling; information, referral and transition services; and crises, disaster, and trauma-related response procedures and counseling. School counseling issues and services covered in the curriculum emphasize a balanced approach that addresses prevention, developmentally appropriate intervention and remediation, and extensive attention is given to comprehensive K-12 developmental counseling program design, implementation, management, and evaluation.
